Chapter Nineteen

DAWN BEGAN to break before we arrived, the wagon slow on the wet ground. I closed my eyes to the scent of rain and the lingering scent of Johann, his clothes stored in the dark space where I slept.

Rain drummed in my dreams, clouds darkening the night even further. A flash of lightning illuminated a broken statue by the side of the road.

A hand touched my shoulder, and warmth spread through my body, the sensation even better than easing my hunger with fresh blood. “Come out of the cold, Kaiden.” Johann’s voice was deep in my dream.

I turned at the touch of Johann’s hand. His brown eyes shone in another flash of lightning. He wore nothing, just as he had that night as he slept. Rain dripped down his muscular chest and flat stomach, sliding down to nestle in the curls of hair just above a sight that made me lick my lips.

His hands moved from my shoulder to my chest, and then around my hips. The warmth grew, turning into a burning heat.

I knew this feeling. I wanted it, wanted him.

He pressed himself against me. His scent and closeness mingled, maleness and pine mixed with electric heat like the lightning, more alive than anything I’d ever experienced. I grabbed him, my fingers digging into his muscular arms. The heat became fire. He was mine.

His muscles were taut beneath my fingers, but he couldn’t resist as I pinned his arms in place. Lightning flashed again, his brown eyes flickering. His pulse beat in his neck.

Hunger mixed with lust, and he leaned his head back, his hips jutting forward. My body jolted with pleasure even as the familiar taste of blood entered my mouth.

My eyes snapped open to the darkness of the wagon, and I bit my lip hard against a surge of disgust that mixed with the usual hunger of waking. My own blood filled my mouth, and I spat it out, my stomach flipping as though I’d eaten something solid I couldn’t digest.

It was a dream. Just a dream. Johann was fine. I hadn’t bitten him.

I didn’t want to bite him. I didn’t.

“Kaiden?”

I swiped my hand over my mouth, and when the stars of a clear sky met my vision, I leaped out of the wagon, landing lightly on my feet next to one of the horses. It whinnied, its ears pinned back.

“Whoa.” Johann grabbed the horse’s reins. “Calm down, girl. Kaiden… are you doing well?”

I blinked, focusing on Johann. The real Johann, not the bitten one in my dream. His large shoulders and muscular chest strained against the tight coat he wore. But on top of that, he wore a long sash filled with stakes for the stakeshooter he held in his right hand, and two more long stakes were tucked into his belt, along with bottles of what I knew would be more of that burning, herb-treated water.

He was a hunter. He would be fine. What had happened in my dream… that would never happen in reality.
